2014 Our 10 Waves of Love (or hate)
To end 2014, a roundtrip of events photos, videos, books, articles that we loved...
The end of the year is usually synonymous of good resolutions : bad habits are put away in the closet (we rarely throw them away as they are made to come back, cause man is weak, as equal to the flesh, which is not oppressed, unlike man)
In short, we took this opportunity to make a point. About our life, family, job, our more or less successful trips, and we turns the pages of the news saying again " It's crazy how fast this year has gone ! ".
Fancy this doubt we have over the term of the previous year and the one to come ...While we all know that even if they are all different, there's always 365 days, 8766 hours divided into 24 slices.
To scroll in 10 sequences, the highlights of 2014 we selected pictures, videos, books, mainly related to the Surf, Kite and SUP, which recall the most intense moments in sports, travel, escape.
Because we all have this common passion of discovery, meeting people, whether it can be waves revealling just for you, a smile shared on the beach strand, these moments that remain etched in our minds and travel through the years, out of concern for whether it was last year or 5 to 15 years ago ...
Bon voyage in 2014 and meet you in 2015, in one day in a year !...
1) Mices and Waves...
A building of 30 floors, 100 feet or 30 meters ...
We all have seen this video, but it's a step in the challenge of the Big waves riding. BENJAMIN SANCHIS our Frenchie breaks all records last november. No music, just a shadow that covers its prey. And check out the jetski rider, Eric Rebière, just as amazing in its risk-taking !
Less famous but also really impressive. BRAD DOMKE, pro skimboarder which flows into the hollow of a barrel in Puerto Escondido Mexico, on his skimboard.
A board slippery like soap, without fins and one meter long. Bravo Brad !
2) Bats and Waves ...
It is now time to get your GoPro out of the tube and take altitude to shoot images. It is the video phenomenon of the year, an embarked camera on a drone. If all of the best waves in the world have been shot to this new video type, we particularly love this one, taken in Mentawai during summer 2014.
3) Explorers of unknown waves ...
Kenavo guys, pure butter Breton surfers, who launched a crazy bet. Join the Solomon Islands near Papua New Guinea, aboard a small ship, unique prototype in the world, built in linen fiber, cork and balsa. Come on !...
We followed the 13 episodes of their surfing adventures in these unexplored regions in LOST IN THE SWELL project.
You can find all the episodes (it's like Lost TV serie, but in the swell, which is more fun because at least we can surf !)
4) Do Braziiiil !
His named is GABRIEL MEDINA, he is 20, got cool head (God Kelly said), comes from Brazil, a "developing country," and won the world title in 2014 under the nose of podium leaders, Yankees and Aussies.
Crowned at the Surfing Mecca in Hawaii, during the "Triple Crown" surfing's most prestigious competition.
What else ?...
5) The trendy Surf Destination of the year...
Cabo Verde also known as the Cape Verde Islands : A new destination for surfing in 2015. 4 hours flight, located under the sun off the coast of Africa, dream waves, no one at the lineup and a culture that mixes Portuguese, Brazilian and African roots.
Come on, We're expecting you there...
6) Douce France ...
Johanne DEFAY the little Frenchie that goes up, placed 8th in ASP world ranking, with two semi-finals at Trestles and Hossegor, four quarter-finals (Fiji, US Open, Portugal and Maui) and in addition titlle of "Rookie of the Year", best hope of the year. Congratulations to our Reunion island girl who symbolizes the breakthrough of Frenchies into the surfing world !
7) Kid's Power !
These two kids are running after each other in the global tournament. They symbolize the rise of the new guard of world surfing, uninhibited and friendly, far from the image of the solitary rebel surfer.
One is world champion 2014, cool head, great competitor, regular and powerful, always there where you expect him. The other one sends tons of watts, is pure inventive, artistic, creative and stylish.
GABRIEL MEDINA and JOHN JOHN FLORENCE are the two surfers who enliven the tournament we watched live this year on the web, late at night or early morning (for those who love to watch ASP comps in live).
We travelled around Planet Surf watching them making us want to go tube riding on the other side of the world, just before we press the pause button on the remote control and hold in the tube under the sheets...
8) The story of a Gentleman Surfer...
We loved that book released last october, its rebellious traveler spirit and lover of the sea.
ARNAUD DE ROSNAY a gentleman of the oceans, as much in love with beautiful women as with soft waves and wind. Passionate by wildest challenges, he was carried away by his enthusiasm and his quest of elsewhere. But his memory is still present in the minds of surfers, with great panache.
A book to be read quietly on your couch, as a perfect getaway for the end of the year.
To buy the book : ARNAUD DE ROSNAY GENTLEMAN DE L'EXTREME - written by Olivier Bonnefon
9) Ocean Breeze...
Do not forget to let breathe the ocean, if we want to see the next generations still be surfing the best waves on the planet.
Storms, rising sea levels, soiled coastlines, polluting boats, enough is enough. Just to say that nothing will disappear in 2015, simply to remember every day that ocean belongs to its inhabitants, and must be respected.
A gesture in 2015 : support SURFIDER FOUNDATION
10) One more year for your Body...
It creaks, stuck, crunches, slap inside ?
To surf, you have to be fit. So take good resolutions for 2015.
What ? No way to stop drinking a beer with your mates surfers sheltered from the hot sun on the beach or forbid to eat this delicious deer Porto pâté grandmother's home made, after spending 3 hours in water water at 14 °.
Rule is simple : the more you surf, the more you can eat (good ingredients) and drink (not too much, unless there is something to celebrate).
But the real secret is to warm up, stretch, relax, meditate. Before going into the waves, and after, to still enjoy the benefits of beautiful surf sessions with your friends.
She is beautiful, delicate and light as a feather. Her husband (unfortunately he is not available on Tinder) practices Paddle Surf with Yoga.
We love her style at Destination Surf and let you wake up with BRIOHNY SMYTH in her cozy apartment. This video is not from 2014, but we will publish it every year, cause we never get tired of watching it, regardless of when it wa released...
Guys, remains to invite her for your next surf session...
