Magic Surf Morocco
A day with Sabine and Zack at Magic Surf Morocco Surfcamp
Sabine and Zak are the owners of the Surf School/ Surfcamp Magic Surf Morocco in Tamraght near Agadir. To prepare for your next surftrip this winter, we asked them 10 questions to find out about all tips and secrets of their destination...
1 / Hello Sabine and Zack, in a few words, how and why have you have chosen to settle in Morocco ?
Like a lot of surfers, we hit the road for several years and we wanted to find a place, without being at the other end of the world, not too far from Europe.
After a few rounds on the world map, our research values focused on Morocco where we at least felt all these good vibrations.
The climate around here is permanent spring, friendly, welcoming and helpful people. We are close from Agadir, a city where you can find everything you want, French is a spoken language throughout, Cooking is fabulous, culture is rich in color and marked by different events in the history of art, and of course you can find a variety of amazing waves in warm water throughout the year.
2 / Who can come to surf in Tamraght ?
Morocco and the region of Tamraght / Tagazhout where we are located, is an area that boasts a coastline full of Surf Spots for all levels. It is an ideal destination for surfing with regular waves for all. Whether you are looking for perfect tubes on the rocks, or a smooth wave on sandy bottom to start and learn.
3 / Why go to Tamraght and not Essaouira or Safi ?
Conversely Essaouira, which is very windy and more favorable for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and Safi, a beautiful surf spot but more difficult to access, Tamraght / Tagazhout is 40 minutes from Agadir with daily flights from Europe at competitive price, and a fast transfer.
These are two lively Moroccan Berber villages, with small shops, restaurants and waterfront cafes, important fact to enjoy your holiday. And we are at the heart of Surf Action : 25 spots between 2 minutes and 1 hour drive max.
4 / To make the most of the waves, where to stay and what kind of accommodation to choose (Surfcamp, apartments, villas ...) ?
Well it depends on individual needs.
The Surfcamp avoids the "fuss"... Nothing to care because everything is organized : transfers, accommodation with other surfers to share your passion, full board including meals on the beach, monitors and guides who have a perfect knowledge of the spots, material provided.
We can also propose lodging in Apartments. This formula is rather chosen by experienced surfers who want to manage and be independent. They rent a car through us and hit the road, though often they like to use the service of our guides. They are picked up at the airport of Agadir down to Tamraght where they take their car and the apartment, and that's it.
This apartment formula is also interesting in the case of small groups who want to be "among friends" and divide the price between them. However, we see them all during the week for surf lessons or guiding.
5 / Places and areas to avoid ?
Not to my knowledge, just the basic rules of traveler : Respect and care, day and night.
6 / Types of waves, beaches ?
As mentioned above, there are all kinds of waves. Beachbreaks on sandy bottom to start without risk, but also spots that require more "challenge" on rock slabs or reef that attract swell like magnets. In winter, heavy swells create perfect waves for experienced riders.
But there is always a fallback spot that allows beginners and intermediate surfers to practice safely and have fun.
And especially there are few flat days in Morocco.
7 / How is a typical day with Magic Surf Morocco ?
A typical day is based on the surfing conditions and desires and capabilities of each surfer. Our goal is to please everyone !
From 07:30AM - Breakfast : hot drinks, fresh orange juice, fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt. Must gain strength before surfing !
08.45AM - Your surfing instructor / guide will meet you and load the vehicle with all the necessary equipment and the picnic, and then depart for the selected surf spot depending on conditions. Free Surf or courses depending on the choice of the formula, under the supervision and guidance of our surf instructors.
01:00 PM - Picnic at the beach, it's more fun and we enjoy the scenery !
02.00h to 05.00hPM - More surfing
06.00PM - Optional yoga lessons, check our surf packages & Yoga retreats on Destination Surf website, relax at Camp enjoying a traditional hammam, massage with argan oil.
08.00PM - It's dinner time, Moroccan and international cuisine served in the patio by the pool, in a relaxed and casual atmosphere among surfers. If you want to stop surfing at noon, to have another activity or relax in your accommodation, it is possible : See our package Cool Surfing on Destination Surf website.
8 / Your favorite beach ?
There are so many and they always change based on the colors of the sky and depending from tides. I can't make my mind !
9 / Your favorite restaurant, bar, place to enjoy the atmosphere of the region ?
My favorite is undoubtedly the 25 ! A Restaurant located on the beach at KM25, as its name suggests. Dinner on the beach with the sunset... What else ?
There you can sample grilled fish specialties and Moroccan dishes, but they also have a great cheeseburger, because everyone does'nt necessarily like fish and tagines !
10 / When there's no surf, what can we do for fun around ?
As mentionned, you always have waves somewhere here. But once you arrived at Tamraght / Tagazhout you will be away from the bustle of the city of Agadir. You will discover the Moroccan culture with friendly locals.
One can go for a ride to Agadir Medina and its famous souk El Khad or explore Paradise Valley, an oasis located about 40 minutes drive from Tamraght in the Atlas Mountains.
Here you can swim in natural pools and lunch in the palm.
You can also take a ride on horseback or camelback on the beach at sunset.
We also have our special secret tips on great places to discover.
Join us and we will tell you all about it !
